My days are pretty much the same. I have a morning routine, time to work and in the afternoon the kids come home and it is what I call “family time”. Sometimes they go to friends, sometimes their friends come over to our house. They each have an afterschool activity once a week, so we usually have pretty busy afternoons.

Recently I noticed that on days that they come home and have nothing to do they prefer to watch TV. I hate when they do that (Though, when I was a kid and did the same thing). Now that I am a mom, I feel that it is such a waste of time. It is not that I’m against watching television, and I understand that sometimes they come home tired after a long day and need some rest. But when it becomes the only thing that interest them, then I know I have a problem.

I decided that I have to have a plan B every day. I need to have ideas of different activities that I can offer them that we can do together. So I gathered 3 of the ideas that work for us lately:

1. We go into the kitchen and make dinner. They decide on the menu and we cook together. Sometimes they decide on the same thing that makes life much easier. But there are cases that each has a different idea, and if they are not too complicated we make them all. Each of the kids is in charge of their own part of the meal. It is a great way to pass the time and the end result is that we have dinner!

2.  Crafts, which doesn’t have to be complicated. What I like to do is to put craft supplies on the table and let them run wild. The things they come up with are so beautiful. It is amazing to see their imagination and creativity go to work. I found that when I show them what to do, they copy me. Sometimes, with more complicated ideas I do that, but in most cases just giving them materials is enough.

They are very into stickers these days. It is a big thing around here. They collect them in a binder, take it to school and exchange stickers with their friends. So I thought it would be a really cool to design their own stickers. I gave them each a sheet of white stickers, some other colorful little stickers, pens and stamps. They had so much fun. And they came up with some cute ideas. They are so happy that now they have stickers that no one else has.

Sometimes you run out of ideas of what to do with the kids, it doesn't have to be complicated, you can find simple activities to have fun with them!

3. Just put music on and dance. We love music in out house, and we love to dance. Everyone has a chance to choose a song they like and we all just have fun with it.

What are your ideas to have fun with your kids and let them be creative? I would love to add more ideas to my list.

Until next time,

Don’t forget to smile   🙂

  1. Love the make your own stickers idea. My daughter is very into stickers right now. I often let my kids have 30 minutes of electronics once they get home, but if I am not monitoring it and moving them onto the next activity, they will still be there at dinnertime.
